Rightly known as Santra Nagari or Orange city for housing world class oranges, Nagpur is the third largest city in the western state of Maharashtra following Mumbai and Pune. In 2001 Nagpur was declared as India's 13th largest urban conglomeration. Globally, Nagpur stands as the 114th largest city. Nagpur lies precisely at the centre of India.

The main attraction and centerpiece of the city is the British fort built in 1818 on the twin hills of Sitabuldi.

Geographic Location of Nagpur:
The district stretches to almost 9897 sq km. The zero milestones of India lie in Nagpur. Situated 274.5 meters to 652.70 meters above sea level 28% of the town is covered by Forest. Nagpur is surrounded by plateau rising northward to the Satpura Range. Kanhan and Pench rivers are the two important rivers of the district. River Wardha in the west and Wainganga in the east merge as tributaries of Godavari River.

Climatic Condition of Nagpur:
Nagpur usually has typical seasonal monsoon weather which is normally dry. Summers witness temperature as high as 48oC. Monsoons hit the highest point during the months of July and August. Monsoon brings down the temperature to almost 27oC. During the winters this temperature drops down to almost 6 to 7oC.

History of Nagpur:
King Bhakt Buland of Deogad kingdom founded Nagpur in the early 18th century. He brought about many developments in the Nagpur city. Next ruler, Chand Sultan followed the foot step of his Bhakt Buland and worked to better the city. Death of Chand Sultan lead rise to many disputes in the year 1739.

Later on, Nagpur became the capital of Bhonsles. However British took over Nagpur from the Bhonsles in 1817and shortly the Nagpur came under the complete British rule.

In 1861 Nagpur was declared as the capital of the Central Provinces of India. With the advent in 1867of Indian railways Nagpur picked up as a major trade centre.
